A student's journey from not having any interest in study to now pursuing medical field

Nishaben, who had come to see her teacher's working method, was not happy seeing a boy, who

kept mum and sat alone in the classroom. Every student in Payalben's classroom is talkative. Without asking they always say, our teacher is this and our teacher is that. Except this only boy who had no expression on his face. Nishaben called him and tried to talk to him.

His name is Yash, originally a native of Rajasthan. But there was some trouble and he came to stay at

Nani's (maternal grandmother) home with his two elder sisters and mother. Two sisters studied in high

school in Rajasthan. But after coming here, they could not study further. Yash got admitted in Standard 4. He had studied in Hindi medium in Rajasthan and here medium was Gujarati... Either due to change of medium and/or tension prevailing in the family, he could not fully adjust himself. Our tendency usually is to not get particularly concerned with the effect any big change may have on the child's psyche. We normally believe that all the problems are for adults only! It just does not touch children; they are not concerned at all! Nishaben felt that this misconception was somehow affecting Yash as well.

Nishaben works for Dr. K. R. Shroff Foundation. Her appointment was the result of her attachment to

children and her genuine concern for them. Nishaben is assigned by the Foundation to look into the

work of teachers placed in government and various grant-aided schools of Idar where there is shortage

of teachers. She happened to meet Yash when she went to overview Payalben's work teaching 7th

standard students in a government school in Idar. She talked with Yash in great details. She also felt that

Yash was weak in Maths and English. Grasping the whole situation, she asked Payalben to pay more

attention to Yash. She tried to secure admissions for his two sisters to study again but it did not workout.

Payalben, a foundation teacher, also provides private tuition. Nishaben asked her to teach Yash in her tuition class for free. Payalben is also very considerate. Values ​​of the foundation are nourished in her too. She immediately honorably accepted the suggestion. After passing 7th, Nishabeh enrolled Yash in 8th grade in the famous Sir Pratap High School in Idar where famous Gujarati writers Pannalal Patel and Umashankar Joshi had studied. Yash regained and grew his self-confidence. He expressed his desire to join medical profession. They both, in turn, arranged Yash’s admission to private tuition classes in Idar tutoring various subjects free of charge, so that he can perform well.

Yash passed 10th grade with good marks. He is now in 12th science. The foundation teacher who

teaches 12th science in Sir Pratap High School pays a little more attention to Yash along with other

students.

“Sticking to the principles and values of a foundation, our focus is always on all children but we pay special attention to children like Yash. If we had not understood his condition in time, Yash might have dropped out of school. Yash respects me as his own mother. I earned this respect because I did not ignore him once he came to my attention. I look to myself and think, would I have left my child behind if my child was in this state of mind as his? Then why not to care for Yash? I still cannot forget his sleepy face and expressionless empty eyes. If I ignore him after seeing all this, it is futile worshipping God, talking faith useless. I am sensitive by nature. I have inherited from my father and grandfather a culture of providing human service. And thanks to foundation, it has provided me the opportunity to practically apply it. Lastly, every effort is worthwhile if Yash succeeds to move to his career path and accomplishes his goals'' says Nishaben.

Nishaben doesn't like to talk much about the work done for Yash. She says, ''I hate it if someone ignores children. And it is a fulfillment of an obligation by a foundation and somewhat as an individual too. And again, we did this as a team!! So, what is there to say something highly, extraordinary about it?'' What she said is true. But, we feel proud that we are able to share this inspiring story with you in her own words.

Yash's mom passed away two years back. There is no longer the umbrella of parents over the heads of

brothers and sisters. Yash is younger to her sisters, but he is the gateway to parental love, affection and

warmth for sisters. He is a ray of sunshine for them. Yash's entire family feels thankful to Nishaben and

other teachers of the foundation for all the hard work they have done for Yash….. and we feel contented

by saving Yash's future from darkness. We also feel proud that the foundation has such a sensitive

team...

અભ્યાસમાં રસ ન રાખવાથી લઈને હવે મેડિકલ ક્ષેત્રે આગળ વધવા સુધીની વિદ્યાર્થીની સફર

વર્ગખંડમાં સૂનમૂન બેઠેલા એક છોકરાંને જોઈને નિશાળમાં મુકેલા પોતાના શિક્ષકની કાર્યપદ્ધતિ જોવા આવેલા નિશાબહેનને મજા ન આવી. પાયલબહેનના વર્ગખંડના દરેક વિદ્યાર્થી બોલકા. અમારા શિક્ષક આમ ને અમારા શિક્ષક તેમ એમ બધા સામેથી કહે જ્યારે આ એક જ વિદ્યાર્થીના મોંઢા પર કોઈ જ હાવભાવ નહીં.

નિશાબહેને એને પાસે બોલાવ્યો ને એની સાથે વાત કરવા પ્રયત્ન કર્યો.

નામ એનું યશ. મૂળ રાજસ્થાનનો વતની. પણ ત્યાં કશીક તકલીફ થઈ ને બે મોટી બહેનો અને મા સાથે એ નાનીના ઘરે રહેવા આવી ગયો.

બે બહેનો રાજસ્થાનમાં હાઈસ્કૂલમાં ભણતી. પણ અહીંયા આવ્યા પછી એ આગળ ભણી ન શકી. જ્યારે યશને ધો.4માં બેસાડ્યો. રાજસ્થાનમાં તે હીન્દી માધ્યમમાં ભણ્યો ને અહીંયા ગુજરાતીમાં.. ક્યાંક મિડીયમ બદલાવવામાં ને ક્યાંક પરિવારમાં ચાલી રહેલા તણાવામાં એ ગોઠવાઈ નહોતો શકતો.

કોઈ પણ ફેરફાર બાળ માનસ પર શું અસર કરે તે અંગે આપણે ત્યાં ખાસ વિચારવામાં નથી આવતું. બધી તકલીફો મોટાઓને બાળકોને વળી શું? એવું સામાન્ય રીતે માની લેવામાં આવે. યશના કિસ્સામાં પણ ક્યાંક આવું થતાનું નિશાબહેનને લાગ્યું. 

નિશાબહેન ડો.કે.આર.શ્રોફ ફાઉન્ડેશનમાં કાર્ય કરે. એમની નિમણૂક જ બાળકો પ્રત્યેના તેમના લગાવને જોઈને થયેલી. 

ફાઉન્ડેશન દ્વારા ઈડરની સરકારી અને વિવિધ ગ્રાન્ટેડ શાળાઓમાં જ્યાં શિક્ષકોની ઘટ હોય ત્યાં મુકાયેલા શિક્ષકોના કાર્યને જોવાનું કામ નિશાબહેનને સોંપાયેલું. તેઓ ઈડરની સરકારી શાળામાં 7માં ધોરણમાં ભણતા વિદ્યાર્થીઓને ભણાવવા મુકેલા પાયલબહેનના કામને જોવા ગયા અને ત્યાં તેમને યશ મળ્યો.

યશ સાથે એમણે ઘણી વાતો કરી. સ્થિતિ આખી સમજીને એમણે પાયલબહેનને યશ પર વધુ ધ્યાન આપવા કહ્યું. યશ ગણિત, અંગ્રેજીમાં નબળો હોવાનું પણ એમને લાગ્યું. એમણે યશની બે બહેનો ફરી ભણવા બેસે એ માટે કોશીશ કરી પણ એ શક્ય ન બન્યું.

ફાઉન્ડેશનના શિક્ષક પાયલબહેન ખાનગી ટ્યુશન પણ કરાવે. નિશાબહેને યશને વિનામૂલ્યે એમના ટ્યુશન ક્લાસમાં ભણાવવા કહ્યું. પાયલબહેન પણ એવા જ લાગણીવાળા. ફાઉન્ડેશનના મૂલ્યો એમનામાં પણ હતા. એમણે તુરત એ સ્વીકાર્યું. 

7મું પાસ કર્યા પછી ઈડરની જાણીતી નિશાળ સર પ્રતાપ હાઈસ્કૂલ કે જ્યાં પન્નાલાલ પટેલ અને ઉમાશંકર જોષી ભણ્યા હતા તેમાં નિશાબહેને યશને ધો.8માં દાખલ કરાવ્યો. 

યશનો આત્મવિશ્વાસ વધવા માંડ્યો. એણે પોતાને મેડિકલ લાઈનમાં જવાની વાત નિશાબહેનને કરી. આ બેઉએ પાછા યશને વિવિધ વિષયો માટે ચાલતા ખાનગી ટ્યુશન ક્લાસમાં વિના મૂલ્યે ગોઠવી દીધા. જેથી એ ઉત્તમ પ્રદર્શન કરી શકે.

ધો.10માં યશ સારા માર્કેસ પાસ થયો. હવે એ 12 સાયન્સમાં છે. 12 સાયન્સમાં પણ ફાઉન્ડેશનના શિક્ષક જે સર પ્રતાપ હાઈસ્કૂલમાં ભણાવે તે અન્ય વિદ્યાર્થીઓ સાથે યશ પર પણ થોડું વધારે ધ્યાન આપે. 

નિશાબહેન કહે, 'ફાઉન્ડેશન તરીકે અમારુ ધ્યાન બધા બાળકો પર હોય. પણ યશ જેવા બાળકો પર અમે વિશેષ ધ્યાન આપીયે. જો યશની સ્થિતિ અમે સમયસર સમજ્યા ન હોત તો કદાચ યશે ભણવાનું છોડી દીધું હોત. યશ પોતાની મા જેટલો મારો આદર કરે. આ આદર એના તરફ મારુ ધ્યાન ગયા પછી મે એના પ્રત્યે દુર્લક્ષ ન સેવ્યું એટલે હું પામી. મને લાગે મારા બાળકની મન સ્થિતિ આવી થઈ હોત તો હું એને છોડી દેત? તો પછી યશને કેમ? એનો સૂનમૂન ચહેરો, ભાવ વગરની આંખો મને આજેય યાદ છે. એ જોયા પછી આંખા આડા કાન કરત તો મારુ ભગવાનને ભજવું, ધર્મની વાત કરવાનું બધુંયે નકામું. સંવેદનશીલ તો હું છું સેવાના સંસ્કાર મારા દાદા, પિતામાં હતા પણ ફાઉન્ડેશન થકી મને એ કરવાની તક મળી. બસ યશની કારકિર્દી બની જાય તો આ બધુ કર્યું લેખે લાગશે..'યશ માટે કરેલી મહેનતની વાત કરવી પણ નિશાબહેનને ગમે નહીં એ કહે, મને બાળકો પ્રત્યે કોઈ દુર્લક્ષ સેવે એ બહુ ચચરે. વળી ફાઉન્ડેસન તરીકે અને ક્યાંક વ્યક્તિ તરીકે મારુ કર્તવ્ય એટલે અમે ટીમ તરીકે આ કર્યું. એમાં કહેવાનું શું?

વાત સાચી હતી પણ અન્યોને એમની આ વાતથી પ્રેરણા મળે માટે કહેવા કહ્યું ને યશની મજાની વાત આજે તમારી સામે મુકી શક્યા. 

યશની મમ્મી બે વર્ષ પહેલા ગુજરી ગયા હતા. ભાઈ બહેનના માથે હવે માતા પિતાની છત્રછાયા નથી રહી. બહેનો માટે યશ નાનો છે છતાં એ એમના માટે પિયરનો દરવાજો છે. આશાનું કીરણ છે. યશ માટે કરેલી મહેનત માટે યશનો આખો પરિવાર નિશાબહેન અને ફાઉન્ડેશનના અન્ય શિક્ષકોનો આભાર માને.. અને અમને રોજીપો યશના ભાવિને અંધકારમય થતું બચાવ્યાનો. ફાઉન્ડેશન પાસે આવી સંવેદનશીલ ટીમ હોવાનો રાજીપો.
