Thirty to forty years ago, we drew water from wells with our hands. Groundwater was that close to the surface. Farmers irrigated their fields using well-water. Then borewells came, and we kept extracting water without restraint. Today the water table has fallen to 800—sometimes even 1,000 feet.”
A village elder in Kuda, Banaskantha, said this as we visited the lake being deepened under the government’s Sujalam–Sufalam scheme, in collaboration with Dr. K. R. Shroff Foundation and VSSM.
What once flourished beneath our feet is now disappearing.
Banaskantha remains one of the most severely affected regions in India when it comes to groundwater depletion. For years, we have worked here on water-conservation efforts, and seeing the government invest its full strength in this region is encouraging.
LakhnI–Diyodar MLA Shri Keshaji Chauhan has been persistent in his mission to restore groundwater levels in his constituency. Through his initiative, the government sanctioned the deepening of Kuda’s lake under the Sujalam–Sufalam scheme. Sixty percent of the excavation cost is funded by the government, and the remaining portion is being supported by the Dr. K. R. Shroff Foundation. This partnership reflects the Foundation’s enduring commitment to water conservation.
There was a time when these traditional water-temples—jalmandirs—were vibrant community spaces. Today, many stand neglected, waiting to be revived. Once this restored lake begins to hold water again, we will, with the support of the villagers, build a small temple at the embankment. This symbolic step will ensure that the lake remains respected, preserved, and protected.
Every village must revive its water-temples.
Kuda has set a powerful example.
Its Sarpanch, Shri Dineshbhai, and the village youth demonstrate a keen environmental awareness that deserves recognition.
Maintain this vigilance. Safeguard the rejuvenated lake.
Let this water-temple remain a source of life for generations.
ધરતીની રક્તવાહીની એવા જલમંદિરનો જીર્ણોદ્ધાર
*“પાંત્રીસ ચાલીસ વર્ષ પહેલા અમે કુવામાંથી હાથેથી પાણી લઈ શકતા. અમારા ભૂગર્ભજળ એટલા ઉપર હતા. ખેડૂતો કૂવાથી ખેતી કરતા. પણ પછી બોરવેલ આવ્યા ને અમે સૌએ અમાપ પાણી ઉલેચ્યા એટલે ભૂગર્ભજળ આજે ૮૦૦ તો ક્યાંક ૧,૦૦૦ ફૂટે પહોંચ્યા.”
બનાસકાંઠાના કુડાનું તળાવ સરકારની સુજલામ સુફલામ યોજના તેમજ KRSF સાથે મળીને VSSM દ્વારા ઊંડુ થઈ રહ્યું હતું તે જોવા ગયા એ વખતે ગામના આગેવાનભાઈએ આ કહ્યું. પાંત્રીસ ચાલીસ વર્ષ પહેલા જળથી મબલક ભૂગર્ભમાં આજે જળ ખૂટી રહ્યા છે. ભારતના ભૂગર્ભને લઈને સૌથી સંવેદનશીલ વિસ્તારમાં બનાસકાંઠા એક છે. અમે વર્ષોથી ત્યાં જળસંચયના કાર્યો કરીએ. સરકાર હવે આ વિસ્તારમાં સઘન પ્રયત્નો કરે જે જોઈને રાજી થઈએ છીએ.
લાખણી અને દિયોદરના ધારાસભ્ય શ્રી કેશાજી ચૌહાણ પણ પોતાના વિસ્તારના તળ પાણીદાર થાય તે માટે સતત પ્રયત્નશીલ. આદરણીય કેશાજીના પ્રયત્નથી સરકારે સુજલામ સુફલામ યોજનામાં કુડાનું તળાવ ખોદવાની અમને મંજૂરી આપી. ખોદકામ માટે થનાર ખર્ચમાં ૬૦ ટકા સરકાર આપશે બાકીના પૈસા ડો. કે.આર.શ્રોફ ફાઉન્ડેશન આપશે. જળ માટેની આ અમારી કટીબદ્ધતા.
એક વખત જે જલમંદિર માણસોથી ઊભરાતું એ જલમંદિર આજે માણસોથી વાટ જોઈ રહ્યું છે. અમે આ જલમંદિરના જીર્ણોદ્ધાર પછી તળાવની પાળે ગ્રામજનોના સહયોગથી નાનકડુ મંદિર બાંધવાનું પણ કરીશું. જેથી તળાવો ગંદા થતા અટકે.
ગામે ગામ જેટલા પણ છે તે તમામ જલમંદિરોનો જીર્ણોદ્ધાર થાય તે ઈચ્છનીય. કુડાગામની સક્રિયતા એમના જલમંદિર માટે ઘણી. સરપંચ શ્રી દિનેશભાઈ તેમજ ગામના યુવાનો પાણી પર્યાવરણના કામો માટે ખુબ જાગૃત. બસ આવા જ જાગૃત રહેજો ને આજે તળાવનું નવીનીકરણ થયું છે તે વર્ષો વર્ષ આવું રહે તે માટે મથજો.
