Kanjhi, a village in Narmada district near the Gujarat–Maharashtra border, sits deep within a tribal belt. The road from Dediapada to Kanjhi cuts briefly through Maharashtra’s interior hamlets before returning to Gujarat. In a region where primary schools often run with sparse attendance, Kanjhi stood out: the classrooms were full, the children energetic, the school alive.
The school lacked adequate teachers, so KRSF appointed Amarsinghbhai there. He was a graduate without employment. Before joining the Foundation, he sustained himself through tailoring work in his village. When he received the opportunity to teach, he set his tailoring aside.
A pattern caught his attention early. Many children arrived wearing torn, frayed, or damaged clothes. He told them to bring whatever was torn so he could repair it. But most parents had migrated for sugarcane-cutting work, leaving no one at home to mend the children’s clothing.
He approached the school principal and asked for permission to bring a sewing machine to the school premises, so he could stitch clothes during recess. The principal agreed. From that day onward, whenever a child arrived in torn clothing, he told them to bring the garment the following day. He mended shirt after shirt, frock after frock, quietly restoring dignity to the children who walked into his classroom.
During a visit, the Foundation’s founder, Pratulbhai, asked him how this idea had emerged. His answer was direct:
“Our core value is Child First. I must think first about the child’s well-being. When a child comes wearing neat, proper clothes, they feel good about being in school. Through that comfort, they come closer to us, and we can teach them better.”
A simple statement, executed through action, holding deep insight.
Teachers like Amarsinghbhai strengthen the meaning of “Child First” not by words, but by precise, grounded service.
ગુજરાત મહારાષ્ટ્રની બોર્ડર પર આવેલું નર્મદા જિલ્લાનું કણજી ગામ. ડેડીયાપાડાથી કણજી તરફ જાવ તો રસ્તામાં તમને મહારાષ્ટ્રના ગામડા પણ જોવા મળે. આદિવાસી વસ્તી ધરાવતા આ ગામની પ્રાથમિક શાળા બાળકોથી ભરેલી. આ ભરેલી શબ્દ મેદાની વિસ્તારમાં નહીવત બાળકોની સંખ્યા સાથે જોયેલી પ્રાથમિક શાળાના કારણે लज्यो...
આ શાળામાં શિક્ષકની ઘટ તે KRSF એ ગામના અમરસિંગભાઈને ત્યાં શિક્ષક તરીકે નિમ્યા. અમરસિંગ અનુસ્નાતક થયા.પણ એમની પાસે કામ નહીં. એ સિલાઈ કામ શીખ્યા ને પોતાના ગામમાં દરજી કામ કરે. પણ એમને KRSF માં કામ મળતા એમણે સિલાઈ કામ બંધ કર્યું.
શાળામાં ભણવા આવતા બાળકોમાંથી ઘણા બાળકો ફાટેલા કપડા પહેરીને આવે. અમરસિંગભાઈ એમને કપડુ ફાટ્યું હોય તો સિલાઈ કરીને પહેરવાનું કહ્યું. પણ ઘણા બાળકોના માતા પિતા શેરડી કાપવાની મજૂરી અર્થે ગામ છોડી ગયેલા. એટલે સિલાઈ કોઈ કરી આપી શકે એવું ઘરે કોઈ નહીં.
આખરે એમણે શાળાના આચાર્ય શ્રી પાસે રીસેશના સમયમાં કપડાં સીવી આપવાનું કામ જો સંચો શાળામાં લાવવાની મંજૂરી મળે તો કરી આપવાની વાત કરી. આચાર્યશ્રીએ હા પાડી ને પછી તો અમરસિંગભાઈ ફાટેલું કપડું પહેરી આવનાર બાળકને કાલે આ કપડુ નિશાળ આવે તો લઈ આવજે હું સાંધી આપીશ એમ કહે ને એમ કરતા કરતા અનેક બાળકોના કપડા એમણે સિવી આપ્યા.
અમરસિંગભાઈને આ વિચાર ક્યાંથી આવ્યો એવું જ્યારે એમની શાળાના મુલાકાતે ગયેલા અમારા પ્રતુલભાઈએ પુછ્યો તો કહે, સર આપણી કોર વેલ્યુમાં બાળક સૌ પ્રથમ છે. એટલે મારે બાળકના હીત માટે સૌથી પહેલા વિચારવાનું હતું. બાળક ચોખ્ખુ, સરખા કપડા પહેરીને આવે તો એને પણ ભણવું ગમે. ને એ બહાને એ આપણી નજીક આવે જેથી આપણે એને સરખુ ભણાવી શકીએ..
કેવી મજાની વાત… અમારી પાસે અમરસિંગભાઈ જેવા શિક્ષકો હોવાનું ગૌરવ…
